Italy's breed law history and what it means for your dog
Italy abolished its national breed-specific legislation in 2009. Unlike Germany, France, or the UK (which has restrictions in Northern Ireland), Italy does not maintain a national list of prohibited or restricted breeds. When your dog arrives at Rome FCO or Milan MXP, the Ministry of Health vet checks documentation and identity. Your breed is not subject to classification.
This makes Italy a less stressful destination for owners of breeds that face restrictions elsewhere in Europe. That said, some Italian municipalities retain local by-laws. If you are moving to a specific city, it is worth a quick check with the local council, though the national-level ban was repealed and the default position is that breed restrictions do not apply.
The EU unlisted process applied to Armenia
The EU unlisted process is the same regardless of which EU member state is the destination. Armenia is not on the EU’s listed countries register, so it cannot benefit from the simplified entry rules. The FAVN test must go to an EU-approved laboratory. Blood is drawn at least 30 days after the first valid rabies vaccination, sent internationally to the lab, and must return a result of at least 0.5 IU/mL.
The 90-day clock starts on the blood draw date. This is established by EU law and applies equally whether you are entering Italy, Germany, France, or any other EU member state. An SSFS-endorsed EU-format health certificate completes the documentation, issued within 10 days of travel. Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131 governs this process from April 2026 onwards.
