Checklist

What your pet needs

Every item below must be completed and verified before your pet can travel. Expand each category for the detail.

Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 microchip required, implanted before or on the same date as the rabies vaccination used to satisfy the wait below. Source: GOV.UK, 'Bringing your pet dog, cat or ferret to Great Britain,' 2026.
Rabies vaccination
Current rabies vaccination required, with at least 21 full days between vaccination and travel. Barbados carries over onto GB's Part 2 list of listed third countries (inherited from EU Regulation 577/2013, Annex II Part 2), so the shorter listed-country wait applies here rather than the titre test and 3-month wait that unlisted countries face. Source: GOV.UK, 'Bringing your pet dog, cat or ferret to Great Britain: Where you're travelling from,' 2026.
Rabies titre test
Not required. Part 2 listed countries, and Barbados is one of them, are exempt from the rabies antibody titre test that trips up owners moving from most of Central America and large parts of Africa and Asia. Source: GOV.UK, 2026; Regulation (EU) No 577/2013, Annex II, Part 2 (retained in GB law).
Quarantine
No routine quarantine for a pet that meets the listed-country rules. Source: GOV.UK, 2026.
Import permit
No APHA import licence needed. That only applies to a pet going into approved quarantine because it hasn't met the standard rules. Source: GOV.UK, 2026.
Health certificate
Great Britain Pet Health Certificate, issued by an official or accredited vet, valid for 10 days from issue to arrival in Great Britain. Source: GOV.UK, 2026.
Export permit
None required specifically to leave Barbados. There is no Barbados outbound export permit separate from the health certificate below; whatever the destination asks for (an import permit, a specific certificate format) is arranged with that country's own authority, not with Barbados.
Health certificate
Veterinary Health Export Certificate issued by Barbados's Veterinary Services after a clinical examination. The UK's own guidance for this route puts that exam at no more than 7 days before departure, and the Barbados authorities recommend the pet be vaccinated and kept away from other animals for a month beforehand to reduce the risk of an infection showing up at the exam, though that isolation period isn't compulsory. Fee: BDS $30.00 per animal, cash only, paid at the Veterinary Services office. Source: APHA, '3890NFG: Export of Dogs and Cats from the United Kingdom to Barbados, Notes for Guidance,' revised 8 November 2023; Government of Barbados export certification process.

Carriers on this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. Confirm the operating carrier's current policy for every flight segment.

British Airways
Operates the only non-stop service between Barbados and the UK, flying Grantley Adams (BGI) to Heathrow year-round on Boeing 787s, plus a daily Gatwick service that started in March 2026. Pets travel through IAG Cargo's temperature-controlled hold; Barbados is on IAG Cargo's confirmed list of pet destinations.
Cargo Only
American Airlines
Flies BGI to Miami (MIA) seven times a week in belly hold. A back-up first leg if BA's direct Heathrow or Gatwick cargo space is full for a given date, with the transatlantic connection to the UK booked as a separate leg.
Cargo Only
Amerijet International
A dedicated cargo freighter operator flying Miami to Bridgetown, useful if a crate is too large for a passenger aircraft's belly hold. Relevant mainly for larger dogs; the onward UK leg still has to be arranged through a separate interline booking.

Costs

What this route typically costs

Barbados Veterinary Health Export Certificate: BDS $30.00 (about USD 15), cash only
Barbados vet fees for microchip, vaccination and the export exam: USD 60-150
Great Britain Pet Health Certificate: GBP 150-300
Dog tapeworm treatment (not needed for cats): GBP 20-40
IATA-compliant travel crate: GBP 60-250
British Airways World Cargo, BGI to Heathrow or Gatwick: GBP 900-2,200 depending on crate size and season
Total typical range: GBP 1,500-3,500

Critical points

British Airways is the only carrier flying Barbados to the UK non-stop. Every other routing means a change of aircraft in Miami, which adds a second airline's booking, its own paperwork, and its own risk of a missed connection for a live animal.

Barbados's own export exam has to happen close to departure, no more than 7 days out. Book it against a confirmed flight date, not an estimated one, or the certificate can expire before the pet actually travels.

Being Part 2 listed cuts out the titre test and the 3-month wait that trip up owners moving from unlisted countries, but it doesn't remove the 21-day vaccination wait or the GB health certificate. Skipping either still gets a pet turned away at the cargo desk.

The rules for bringing a pet into United Kingdom

United Kingdom keeps its import requirements relatively light, which makes preparing easier. Even so, the basics still need to be right and in the correct order.

How to keep this move on track

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.
