Critical points

Lithuania requires muzzling and lead use in public for certain breeds: American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, and crossbreeds. Contact SFVS at vmvt.lt before travelling with these breeds.

Vilnius Airport (VNO) has smaller cargo facilities than Brussels Airport (BRU) or Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS). Confirm live animal cargo capacity at VNO with the airline before booking.

The KLM via Amsterdam connection is convenient from Brussels as the BRU-AMS leg is very short, and AMS to VNO is a direct KLM service.

Belgian EU pet passports must be issued by a FAVV/AFSCA-authorised vet.

Brussels to Vilnius: the practical routes

Belgium and Lithuania have decent connectivity via Amsterdam and Warsaw. The KLM via Amsterdam option is clean: BRU to AMS takes under an hour, and KLM operates AMS to VNO directly. Amsterdam’s live animal handling quality at Schiphol is a benefit for cargo pets.

The LOT via Warsaw route is worth considering, particularly for owners who find better connections from Brussels to Warsaw than to Amsterdam. Brussels Airlines has codeshare arrangements with several carriers serving WAW. LOT’s WAW-VNO service is regular and reliable.

For small cabin pets, both routings are manageable in terms of total journey time. For large dogs in cargo, Amsterdam Schiphol’s cargo infrastructure is stronger than Warsaw, so the KLM routing edges ahead on this dimension.

Lithuania's breed handling rules

Unlike Latvia, Lithuania does not ban Pit Bull-type dogs from entering the country. Instead, Lithuanian law requires that certain breeds be muzzled and on a lead whenever in public. The affected breeds include American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, and their crossbreeds.

Belgian owners of these breeds can relocate to Lithuania, but must comply with the handling requirements from arrival. Local municipalities in Lithuania sometimes apply additional restrictions beyond the national rules.

Contact the SFVS at vmvt.lt before travel to confirm current requirements for your specific breed and the municipality where you will be living.
