Wildlife rabies in Bulgaria: does it change your pet's documentation?

Bulgaria does have areas with wildlife rabies, primarily in rural regions. This can cause confusion among owners who wonder whether the titre test requirement applies.

For EU-to-GB pet travel, the relevant question is not whether the country has any wildlife rabies, but whether it appears on the UK’s approved countries list for pet travel. Bulgaria is an EU member state and is on that list. That means the titre test does not apply to pets correctly vaccinated and documented in Bulgaria.

What it does mean is that your pet’s rabies vaccination must be current and correctly recorded in the AHC. A lapsed vaccination, an incorrect microchip timing, or missing documentation would trigger the same penalties as any other non-compliant arrival. The safeguards are there regardless of Bulgaria’s wildlife status.

Direct flights vs hub routing from Sofia

Bulgaria Air’s direct Sofia to Heathrow service is the cleanest option for cargo pets. A single carrier means your pet is handled fewer times, and the 3-4 hour direct flight is shorter than any hub-connected alternative.

If Bulgaria Air cargo is not available for your dates, Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt and KLM via Amsterdam are both well-established hub options. Frankfurt has particularly strong live animal handling infrastructure. Both routes add a connection but are reliable.

Wizz Air operates budget flights from Sofia to UK airports but does not accept cargo pets. In-cabin travel on Wizz Air is possible for very small pets within the weight limit, but most dogs will need a cargo option.
