Critical points

No titre test required from Chile to Germany: this is the key advantage of Chile's listed status. Start planning 6-8 weeks before travel instead of 5 months.

German Bundesland breed restrictions vary significantly. Check your destination state's rules before starting.

The SAG-endorsed AHC must be issued within 10 days of travel. Schedule the vet appointment close to departure.

No direct SCL-Germany cargo route exists; all routes connect via a European hub (usually MAD or CDG).

Why does Chile's listed status make such a difference for Germany?

The EU classifies third countries into two categories for pet travel: listed and non-listed. Listed countries are those whose animal health standards are formally recognised as equivalent to EU requirements. Chile is one of those listed countries.

For a Chilean pet entering Germany, the titre test and 3-month wait that apply to pets from Colombia or Peru are entirely waived. Your pet needs: an ISO microchip that predates the rabies vaccination, a current and valid rabies vaccination (with the 21-day post-primary wait satisfied), and an EU Animal Health Certificate from a SAG-authorised official vet issued within 10 days of travel.

That is a four to six week preparation window. Compare that to five months for non-listed country pets from the same continent, and you see why Chile’s listed status is significant for families relocating to Germany.

The savings are also financial: no titre test laboratory fee of EUR 85-170, and no time penalty from the 3-month wait.

Germany's breed restrictions: what Chilean owners need to check

Germany has a layered breed restriction system that catches some owners by surprise. At the federal level, Pit Bull Terrier and Tosa Inu are banned from import and possession. But beyond federal law, each of Germany’s 16 Bundeslaender (states) has its own rules, and these vary considerably.

Bavaria is the strictest. It restricts Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, American Bulldog, Rottweiler, Cane Corso, and several other breeds in addition to the federal bans. North Rhine-Westphalia, Hamburg, and Baden-Wurttemberg have their own lists that differ from Bavaria’s. Some breeds that are unrestricted in one state are banned in another.

Before starting the Chile to Germany move, check the breed rules for your specific destination Bundesland. The relevant authority is the Veterinaramt (Veterinary Authority) of your destination district. If your dog is on a restricted list, entry to that Bundesland can be refused even if the animal cleared federal customs at Frankfurt. Verify before you book.

Cargo routing from Santiago to Germany: what to expect

There is no direct cargo flight from Santiago to Germany. All routes connect through a European hub. The most common connections are Madrid via Iberia or LATAM (then onward to Frankfurt or Munich), or via Paris CDG with Air France.

Iberia operates SCL to MAD direct, and Iberia Cargo or LATAM Cargo handle the live animal transport. From Madrid, a second cargo leg carries the pet to Frankfurt (FRA) or another German airport. The Madrid connection is generally manageable, with transit times that are appropriate for cargo welfare if you choose wisely.

Lufthansa Cargo is the preferred option for the final Germany delivery, with established live animal handling at Frankfurt. Your relocation agent or cargo coordinator will route based on availability and your specific German destination.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Chile is a listed (Part 2) country under EU pet travel rules, so the FAVN titre test and 3-month wait are waived. Your pet needs a microchip (predating the vaccination), a current rabies vaccination, and a SAG-endorsed EU Animal Health Certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Source: food.ec.europa.eu, 2026.
Four to six weeks, assuming your pet’s vaccination and microchip are already in order. No titre test wait applies from Chile. The main steps are booking cargo (4-6 weeks ahead) and arranging the SAG-endorsed AHC within 10 days of travel.
SAG (Servicio Agricola y Ganadero) is the Chilean government agricultural and food safety authority. SAG-authorised official vets are registered with SAG to issue and endorse health certificates for animal export. Ask your vet whether they are SAG-authorised; if not, SAG can direct you to an authorised vet in your area.
If your dog is not a restricted breed under Bavarian law, yes. Bavaria has one of Germany’s strictest breed lists, including Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, and others beyond the federal Pit Bull and Tosa bans. Check the Bavarian breed restriction list against your dog’s breed before booking. If restricted, the dog cannot legally be kept in Bavaria regardless of import documentation.
EUR 900 to EUR 2,200 depending on crate size and routing via Madrid or other hub. Add EUR 90-220 for the SAG-authorised vet certificate and SAG endorsement, plus EUR 80-250 for a crate if needed. Total all-in is typically EUR 1,300 to EUR 3,200, significantly lower than the non-listed country routes that require a titre test.
