Critical points

The CDC Dog Import Form is required for all dogs entering the US, including from Czech Republic. Complete it before travel.

The 30-day minimum after rabies vaccination is a firm CDC requirement that applies to all countries, including non-high-risk ones.

The health certificate must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation.

Confirm live animal acceptance on every leg of the journey if connecting via a hub. Each leg must be separately confirmed.

What the US Requires from Czech-Origin Pets

The CDC’s two-tier system for dog imports works in favour of Czech pet owners. Countries with a high endemic dog rabies risk appear on the CDC high-risk list and face a titre test requirement, minimum age rules, and restricted ports of entry. Czech Republic is not on that list, so the simpler pathway applies.

For dogs from the Czech Republic, the US entry requirements are: an ISO-compatible microchip implanted before the first rabies vaccination; a valid rabies vaccination administered at least 30 days before arrival; a CDC Dog Import Form submitted via dogs.cdc.gov; and a health certificate from a licensed Czech veterinarian, in English or with a certified English translation, issued within 10 days of travel.

The 30-day vaccination rule applies across the board. Even from non-high-risk countries, a dog arriving with a vaccination given fewer than 30 days before arrival will face scrutiny at the port of entry. If your dog is currently unvaccinated or just had a new primary vaccination, plan for at least five to six weeks before travel to clear the 30-day minimum and allow time for the health certificate.

Cats from the Czech Republic face no federal US import requirements. Airline-level pet policies are the main practical constraint.

The CDC Dog Import Form and Port of Entry Requirements

The CDC Dog Import Form (dogs.cdc.gov) is a mandatory step for all dogs arriving in the US from any country, including the Czech Republic. Complete it online before travel; it generates a QR code that you present at the US port of entry. The form is free and takes about ten minutes to complete if you have your dog’s microchip number, vaccination record, and travel dates to hand.

All dogs arriving in the US must land at a CDC-approved port of entry. For Czech-origin pets connecting via European hubs, the first US airport will typically be JFK, Chicago O’Hare, Miami, or another major hub, all of which are CDC-approved. Confirm the specific port of entry when booking cargo and check the current CDC-approved list.

On arrival, USDA APHIS inspectors check the documentation: health certificate, vaccination record, microchip, and CDC form. For well-documented arrivals from non-high-risk countries, the process is brief. Arrivals with incomplete documentation may face secondary inspection or a hold.

Routing Options from Prague to the US

Prague Vaclav Havel Airport does not have a wide variety of direct long-haul cargo connections to the US. Most pet shipments from Prague to US destinations connect through a European hub: Frankfurt via Lufthansa Cargo, Amsterdam via KLM Cargo, or Paris via Air France Cargo are the most commonly used options. Czech Airlines/Smartwings offers some direct or quasi-direct services to JFK but this varies by season.

When routing through a European hub, confirm live animal acceptance on both the Prague to hub leg and the hub to US leg. Each carrier and each leg must be booked and confirmed separately. A booking on Lufthansa from Prague to Frankfurt does not automatically include the Frankfurt to New York leg; that is a separate Lufthansa Cargo booking.

Turnaround time at European hub airports varies. Frankfurt and Amsterdam both have established live animal handling facilities. Hub transit times for live animal cargo are typically two to four hours. Total journey time from Prague to a US city, including hub transit, is usually 12-18 hours depending on routing.

For smaller dogs or cats that qualify for cabin travel, some EU carriers will accept cabin pets on the Prague to hub leg. The hub to US transatlantic leg almost universally requires cargo for pets. Confirm the cabin policy for each specific leg when booking.

FAQ

Common questions

On short intra-European legs (Prague to a hub), some carriers accept small pets in cabin. On the transatlantic leg from the hub to the US, almost all airlines require pets to travel as cargo regardless of size. You would need to confirm cabin pet acceptance on the European leg separately from the cargo booking on the transatlantic leg.
US customs requires the health certificate to be in English or accompanied by a certified translation. A Czech-language certificate alone is not sufficient. Ask your Czech vet to issue the certificate in English (most vets experienced with international travel can do this) or arrange a certified translation.
Frankfurt Airport has established live animal handling procedures. The transit for your pet would involve holding facilities at Frankfurt while the connecting flight is loaded. Lufthansa Cargo handles the transit logistics. Your relocation agent or the booking agent can provide the specific pre-travel information pack that covers the Frankfurt connection process.
CDC-approved ports include New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles LAX, Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth, Seattle, and several others. The port you use depends on your cargo routing. JFK is the most common first US port for flights via European hubs. Check the CDC website for the current full list.
The CDC and USDA apply the same requirements to all dogs regardless of breed, pedigree, or registration status. Breed does not affect the vaccination or form requirements. Some US states have local breed restrictions, so check your destination state separately.
