What this route typically costs
Critical points
The KVCS import permit is mandatory and must be obtained before travel. Start this process at least 10-12 weeks in advance.
Air Astana's live animal cargo policy should be confirmed directly with Air Astana Cargo before booking, as it is not consistently published.
Kazakhstan has two main international airports. Confirm the correct arrival point (Almaty for ALA, Astana for NQZ) based on your final destination in Kazakhstan.
Rabies vaccination validity is checked. Some KVCS requirements specify the vaccination must be within the past 12 months. Confirm current requirements before travel.
Air Astana direct from Frankfurt: a real advantage
Most Central Asian pet transport routes from Europe route through Istanbul, which adds a connection and transit time. Germany has a distinct advantage here: Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s national carrier, operates a direct Frankfurt (FRA) to Almaty (ALA) service. This reduces the number of handling steps your pet goes through and shortens the total journey time.
The Air Astana cargo team should be your first call if you are using this route. Confirm that they accept live animals on the specific dates you are travelling, the size and weight restrictions for your pet’s crate, and the booking process. Air Astana does accept live animal cargo, but the details need to be confirmed in advance rather than assumed.
If Air Astana is not available or not suitable, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul (FRA-IST-ALA) is the established alternative. Turkish Airlines Cargo has clear procedures for live animal movements on this corridor and operates to both ALA and NQZ.
The KVCS permit process: starting early is key
The Committee for Veterinary Control and Supervision (KVCS) in Kazakhstan does not have the same online presence or responsiveness as some other national veterinary authorities. Start the permit application early, at least 10-12 weeks before your travel date, and follow up regularly.
The permit application typically requires your pet’s species, breed, age, microchip number, vaccination records, and intended entry point. The KVCS reviews the application and issues a permit confirming that the import is authorised. This permit must be presented on arrival at ALA or NQZ.
Kazakhstan is part of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), but this primarily affects trade flows between EEU member states. For a pet import from Germany (outside the EEU), the standard KVCS process applies. A specialist agent with experience in Central Asia can work through the KVCS process and maintain communication with the Kazakhstani authorities on your behalf.
