Pet Transport from Hong Kong to the UK: Listed Country Advantage and AFCD Export

Dogs must have a tapeworm treatment administered by a vet 1-5 days before UK arrival. AFCD requires a live animal export licence for all pets leaving Hong Kong. Apply online via the AFCD licensing portal. Allow 2-3 weeks for processing. Once the licence is in place, the health certificate is issued by an APHA-listed official vet in Hong Kong in UK AHC format, endorsed by AFCD. The AHC must be issued within 10 days of UK arrival. The tapeworm treatment for dogs must also fall within the 1-5 day window before UK arrival, so coordinate the vet appointment carefully.

Cathay Pacific Cargo from HKG to London Heathrow (LHR) is the most direct and commonly used carrier for this route. Cathay’s live animal handling procedures for HKG-LHR are well-established. British Airways World Cargo and Virgin Atlantic Cargo also operate HKG-LHR. Entry into the UK for live animal imports must be via an approved POAO (Port of Official Authorised Border Inspection); London Heathrow (LHR) is the primary approved port.

The listed country advantage makes the UK one of the simplest destinations for HK-based pet owners. UK: no titre test, no quarantine, total preparation 4-8 weeks. For owners choosing between the UK and New Zealand as a destination, or whose primary concern is simplifying the move, the UK has a significant advantage. The USA is also simpler than New Zealand but requires the CDC Dog Import Form which adds a specific administrative step. Australia has varying requirements depending on origin country but generally also requires a titre test and longer preparation times.
