Critical points
Hungary bans American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier under Government Decree 35/1997. Rottweiler, Bull Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier are restricted (require special conditions in Hungary). The UK bans Pit Bull Terrier type dogs under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. Verify your breed at both ends before booking.
Wizz Air does not accept cargo pets. If your dog is too large for in-cabin travel on Wizz Air, you need a cargo option such as British Airways World Cargo or Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt.
Approved carriers on this route
| Airline | Notes | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Wizz Air | Wizz Air operates Budapest Liszt Ferenc (BUD) to London Luton (LTN) and other UK airports. Small pets in cabin (typically up to 6-8kg including carrier). Wizz Air does not accept cargo pets. Suitable only for very small pets that meet in-cabin size limits. | Cabin Only |
| British Airways | BA World Cargo handles pet transport between Budapest and London Heathrow. No cabin pets on any BA route. Book through an approved cargo agent. | Cargo Only |
| Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt | Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt (FRA) is a well-established hub routing for pets from Hungary. Frankfurt has comprehensive live animal handling facilities and is a reliable transit point for UK-bound cargo. | Cargo Only |
| KLM via Amsterdam | KLM Cargo via Amsterdam Schiphol is another solid option. BUD-AMS-LHR routing gives access to one of Europe's best cargo handling airports. | Cargo Only |
Breed restrictions at both ends: what to check
Hungary and the UK both operate breed restrictions, and they overlap on some types. Hungary bans American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, with additional conditions on Rottweiler, Bull Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, the UK bans dogs that substantially conform to the Pit Bull Terrier type, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro.
If your dog falls into any of these categories, check its legal position under Hungarian law before export, and under UK law before import. The UK’s breed ban assessment is type-based, not purely breed-based, which means a mixed-breed dog that physically resembles a banned type can be subject to the same rules as a pedigree.
Most dogs on this route are not affected. But it is worth a quick confirmation, because arriving with a banned type at a UK airport without a Certificate of Exemption will result in the animal being detained.
Cargo options from Budapest to London
For larger pets, direct cargo from Budapest to Heathrow or via a hub is the practical route. British Airways World Cargo handles the BUD-LHR route directly. Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt and KLM via Amsterdam are both solid alternatives, with Frankfurt and Schiphol both equipped for live animal handling.
Wizz Air, which operates BUD-LTN and other UK routes, does not carry cargo pets. It is useful only if your pet is very small and qualifies for in-cabin travel. For most larger dogs, the choice is between BA direct and a Frankfurt or Amsterdam hub routing.
