Critical points
Verify DALRRD titre test status for Japan before planning, determines your timeline entirely.
DALRRD import permit takes 4-8 weeks. Apply immediately.
Vaccination must be 30-365 days before SA arrival.
The titre test question: verify with DALRRD directly
South Africa maintains bilateral veterinary agreements with certain countries that remove or reduce titre test requirements for imported pets. Whether Japan is on the current bilateral agreement list should be confirmed directly at dalrrd.gov.za or through an experienced agent before you plan anything.
If no titre test is required from Japan: preparation is 6-10 weeks (DALRRD permit plus AQS certificate). If a titre test is required: add the vaccination sequence and a mandatory waiting period, pushing the timeline to 22-26 weeks. That’s a significant difference, confirm the status first.
AQS export certificate: what Japan issues
AQS Japan issues the export health certificate for all live animal exports. For South Africa, the certificate must be in DALRRD’s required format. AQS offices at Narita and Haneda handle these regularly and know the documentation requirements for various destinations.
The certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel. Book the AQS appointment with that window clearly in mind. The DALRRD health certificate conditions must match those specified in your DALRRD import permit exactly, ensure the permit is in hand before finalising the AQS certificate.
Emirates vs Singapore Airlines: the long haul
No direct Tokyo-Johannesburg cargo service exists. Emirates via Dubai International (DXB) is the most commonly used routing for Japan-South Africa pet cargo. Singapore Airlines via Changi is the main alternative, with a strong temperature-controlled cargo operation on the Changi-Johannesburg corridor.
For brachycephalic breeds, be aware of Emirates’ summer DXB heat embargoes (typically May-September), which can restrict acceptance. Singapore Airlines via Changi doesn’t have the same heat embargo issues and is the better choice for flat-nosed breeds.
