What this route typically costs
Critical points
Jordan is on the CDC's high-risk country list for dog rabies. The FAVN titre test and high-risk pathway are mandatory for all dogs. No exceptions.
Dogs must be at least 6 months old to enter the US from a high-risk country.
Cats from Jordan to the US face no federal import requirements.
Dogs must arrive at a CDC-approved port of entry. Confirm your chosen US airport is on the CDC approved list before booking.
If the dog was vaccinated outside the US, the vaccination must pre-date the microchip by at least one day or both must be done simultaneously for the vaccination to count.
The CDC High-Risk Country Pathway for Jordan
The CDC classifies countries based on their dog rabies status. Countries with a history of endemic dog rabies appear on the high-risk list, and Jordan is one of them. For dogs coming from high-risk countries, the standard US import process is replaced by a more involved pathway.
The requirements for dogs from Jordan entering the US are: the dog must be at least 6 months old; an ISO-compatible microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination; a valid rabies vaccination must have been given at least 30 days before the FAVN blood draw; a FAVN titre test at a CDC-approved laboratory must return a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml; a CDC Dog Import Form must be submitted via dogs.cdc.gov before travel; and the dog must arrive at a CDC-approved US port of entry.
The sequence matters. The microchip must predate the vaccination, and the vaccination must predate the blood draw by at least 30 days. A vaccination given after the microchip was implanted and at least 30 days before the blood draw is the valid sequence. If the documentation cannot confirm this sequence, US customs may reject the dog at the port of entry.
CDC-approved laboratories for the FAVN test include Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and ANTECH Diagnostics. Blood drawn in Jordan can be couriered to these labs. Your vet in Jordan can advise on the courier process.
Cats Have a Simpler Route
Cats from Jordan face no federal US import requirements. The CDC and USDA do not impose vaccination, titre test, or age requirements on cats entering from Jordan. The practical constraints for cats are airline-level policies, not federal regulations.
If your cat is travelling with you from Jordan to the US, the main things to confirm are the airline’s pet acceptance policy, carrier dimensions, and whether your cat will travel in cabin or as cargo. Check with Royal Jordanian or your connecting carrier for their specific cat policy.
A microchip is not required for a cat entering the US but is strongly recommended for identification purposes and for any future international travel. A rabies vaccination is also not required for cats entering the US but is good practice and may be required by your destination state or by your accommodation provider.
Flights from Amman to the US and Choosing Your Port of Entry
Royal Jordanian operates direct flights from Amman Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) to New York JFK, with connecting services to Chicago and Detroit. These are the most direct routing options for Jordan to US pet shipments. Live animals travel as cargo; Royal Jordanian Cargo handles live animal shipments with advance booking.
The CDC-approved ports of entry for live animals include JFK, LAX, Chicago O’Hare, Miami, and several other major airports. Royal Jordanian’s direct JFK service makes New York the simplest arrival point. If connecting via a European hub, confirm that the connecting carrier also accepts live animals on the second leg.
At the port of entry, CDC and USDA inspectors check the dog’s documentation: microchip scan, vaccination record, titre test certificate, and CDC Dog Import Form. Dogs from high-risk countries with all documentation in order are typically processed without additional hold time. Dogs without complete documentation may be held or returned.
The Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture health certificate must accompany the pet. It should cover the microchip number, vaccination history, titre test details, and a fitness-for-travel declaration. Have it issued within the validity window applicable to US entry.
