Critical points

Kazakhstan primarily issues EAEU-format veterinary certificates for export. For EU entry, an EU-format health certificate is required. Confirm your vet in Kazakhstan can prepare and have endorsed the EU-format certificate before travel.

Air Astana flies to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), not Brussels directly. Factor in the AMS-to-BRU connection when planning travel.

The 90-day wait from blood draw date is fixed. Do not book Belgium travel until you know exactly when the 90 days expire.

Microchip before vaccination. This sequence is a legal requirement under EU rules and cannot be reversed.

Belgium's EU requirements for Kazakh pets

Belgium applies EU Regulation 576/2013 to all pets from unlisted third countries. Kazakhstan is unlisted. The steps: ISO microchip implanted before vaccination, rabies vaccination, FAVN titre test at an EU-approved laboratory (minimum 0.5 IU/ml, blood drawn 30+ days after vaccination), 90-day wait from blood draw date, and EU-format health certificate endorsed by the Kazakh Veterinary Committee, valid 10 days.

FASFC inspects incoming pets at Brussels Airport (BRU). Compliant pets are released without quarantine.

EU-format health certificate from Kazakhstan: an important distinction

Kazakhstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). For movements between EAEU countries, Kazakhstan uses the EAEU-format veterinary certificate. This format is not the same as the EU-format required for pet entry into Belgium.

For your pet to enter Belgium, your Kazakh vet must prepare and have endorsed an EU-format health certificate complying with EU Regulation 2020/692 for non-commercial movement from unlisted countries. Discuss this specifically with your vet in Kazakhstan, or with an IPATA-registered agent, before starting the documentation process. Not all vets in Kazakhstan routinely prepare EU-format export certificates, so finding one with the right experience is important.

Routing from Kazakhstan to Brussels

Air Astana operates from Almaty (ALA) and Astana (NQZ) to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS). This is the most natural long-haul option: Air Astana Cargo handles live animals on these routes, and Amsterdam is close to Brussels. From AMS, a feeder flight (Brussels Airlines, Ryanair, or others) or surface transport completes the journey to Belgium.

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the simpler single-carrier option if you prefer to avoid the AMS connection. ALA or NQZ to IST then IST to BRU on Turkish Airlines Cargo.

Flydubai via Dubai and Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt are alternatives if neither Air Astana nor Turkish Airlines works on your preferred dates.

FAQ

Common questions about this route

Yes. Kazakhstan routinely uses the EAEU-format veterinary certificate. For EU entry into Belgium, an EU-format health certificate complying with EU Regulation 2020/692 is required. Confirm your Kazakh vet can prepare this format before starting the documentation process.
Air Astana flies to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), not Brussels directly. From AMS, a short feeder flight or surface transport completes the journey to Belgium. Air Astana Cargo accepts live animals on their Amsterdam route. Confirm specific live animal cargo procedures directly with Air Astana Cargo.
Kazakhstan is not on the EU’s approved list of third countries for pet travel. EU Regulation 576/2013 requires pets from unlisted countries to complete the FAVN titre test and 90-day wait before entering any EU member state.
Confirm with your vet in Kazakhstan whether any EU-approved FAVN titre test laboratories are accessible locally or in neighbouring countries. If not, blood must be shipped cold to an approved lab in Europe. Allow two to four weeks for shipping and results.
A minimum of 22 to 28 weeks from the first vet appointment to Belgium arrival. The 90-day wait from the titre test blood draw is the main constraint.
