The Malaysia to Thailand pet import process
Each step must be completed in a precise sequence. Start early. We manage every stage and deadline.
What your pet needs to enter Thailand
Every item below must be in place before your pet can travel. We manage and verify each one.
What this route typically costs
Critical points to read before you book
Apply for the DLD permit at least 7 days before departure. Email the DLD Animal Quarantine Station at your Thai entry port (Bangkok Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang). Allow 7 working days for issue.
Microchip must pre-date all vaccinations. If the chip was inserted after the rabies jab, Thai DLD may invalidate the vaccination record.
Health certificate must have a government stamp. A vet's personal signature without DVS official endorsement is not acceptable at Thai customs.
Malaysia is rabies-endemic. Thai DLD documentation must clearly show vaccination is current and within the 12-month validity period.
AirAsia cargo availability for live animals on international routes varies. Confirm live animal acceptance directly before booking.
Carriers approved for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know which carriers to use and how to book.
Getting the DLD import permit from Malaysia
The import permit is issued by Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development (DLD) Animal Quarantine Station at the entry port. Most direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). Email the relevant DLD AQS station with your pet’s details: microchip number, vaccination records and intended travel date. Expect a reply and permit within seven working days.
The permit is valid for 60 days from issue, so there is good flexibility if your travel date shifts. Apply between 7 and 60 days before departure. A permit is required; arriving without one means your pet will be held while the DLD processes an emergency application, which adds time, cost and stress.
If you prefer not to handle the DLD correspondence yourself, a Thai-based relocation agent can manage the application. They often have direct contacts at the relevant AQS stations and can clarify any questions about the documentation requirements.
Vaccinations: what Malaysia to Thailand actually requires
Thailand requires more than just a rabies vaccination. The full list for dogs includes rabies, canine distemper, canine hepatitis, canine parvovirus and leptospirosis. For cats, rabies and feline panleukopenia (feline distemper) are required. All must be given at least 21 days before arrival and must be within the past 12 months.
The microchip must be in place before the first vaccination. Thai DLD links the microchip number to the vaccination records. If there is any uncertainty about the order of microchipping and vaccination, the DLD may require the vaccination to be repeated.
The DVS export health certificate from your Malaysian vet must record all of these vaccinations clearly, with dates, vaccine product names and the vet’s details. The certificate must be officially stamped by the Malaysian DVS. Thailand treats this endorsement as the official export certification.
Comparing Malaysia to Thailand with Malaysia to Philippines and Malaysia to India
| Factor | Malaysia to Thailand | Malaysia to Philippines | Malaysia to India |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titre test | No | No | No |
| Quarantine | No (discretionary) | 30 days BAI | 15 days AQCS |
| Import permit | DLD (7-60 days ahead) | SPSIC (BAI) | AQCS NOC |
| Preparation time | 4-6 weeks | 8-12 weeks | 4-8 weeks |
| Rough total cost | USD 800-2,000 | USD 1,200-2,800 | USD 1,400-3,200 |
Thailand is the easiest of the three destinations for Malaysia-origin pets. There is no quarantine for compliant arrivals and the DLD permit is more straightforward than the Philippines SPSIC or India’s AQCS NOC. If you have flexibility on destination, Thailand is the most operationally simple option in this group.
