Critical points

Mauritius is unlisted for UK pet travel. The FAVN titre test and 90-day wait are mandatory. Plan four to five months minimum from microchip to travel.

Mauritius has direct flights to London on Air Mauritius and British Airways, which is a significant advantage compared to many unlisted-country routes that require hub transits.

The FAVN blood sample can be sent to APHA-approved laboratories internationally. Confirm with your vet in Mauritius which laboratory they work with and the logistics for sample shipping.

Note: Mauritius requires a mandatory quarantine for pets ARRIVING IN Mauritius from most countries. This does not affect pets being exported from Mauritius. But if you plan to return to Mauritius with this pet, be aware of that requirement.

Two direct carriers compared: Air Mauritius vs British Airways

Unlike many unlisted countries that require multiple transits to reach the UK, Mauritius has direct flights to London Heathrow. Air Mauritius, the national carrier, accepts pets as cargo on the MRU-LHR route. British Airways operates the same route and also accepts pets via BA World Cargo.

Both are practical and avoid the complexity of hub routing through Dubai (summer heat embargoes), Johannesburg, or other transits. For a pet that already has a long titre test waiting period to complete, having a direct flight option at the end of the process is a genuine advantage.

Emirates via Dubai is an alternative if the direct options are unavailable, but summer travel should avoid the Dubai transit given Emirates SkyCargo’s June to September heat embargoes.

FAVN titre test logistics from Mauritius

The FAVN titre test requires blood to be drawn at least 30 days after the primary rabies vaccination, then sent to an APHA-approved laboratory for analysis. The laboratory checks the blood sample for rabies antibodies and reports a result of 0.5 IU/ml or above (pass) or below (fail).

From Mauritius, sample shipping to an APHA-approved lab requires coordinating with your vet on the logistics: the blood must be stored and shipped correctly to preserve viability. Some APHA-approved labs in Europe accept shipped samples from Mauritius regularly. Your vet may have an established relationship with one, or can advise on sample shipping.

If the titre test result passes, the 90-day waiting period begins from the date of the successful blood draw. The animal cannot travel to the UK until those 90 days are complete.

FAQ

Common questions about this route

The UK requires the titre test because Mauritius is unlisted under UK pet travel rules. The FAVN titre test at an APHA-approved lab, blood drawn at least 30 days after primary vaccination, result 0.5 IU/ml or above, followed by a 90-day wait. Source: GOV.UK, 2026.
Yes. Air Mauritius and British Airways both operate direct services from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International (MRU) to London Heathrow and both accept pets as cargo. Direct flights are available, which is a significant advantage compared to many other unlisted-country routes.
No. Mauritius’s mandatory quarantine applies to pets ARRIVING in Mauritius, not to pets being exported from Mauritius. If you are moving your pet from Mauritius to the UK, the Mauritius quarantine is not relevant to the export. The 90-day wait is a UK requirement, not a Mauritius one.
Praziquantel treatment administered by a vet and recorded in the health certificate, between 24 and 120 hours before the dog’s scheduled UK arrival time. Time it from UK arrival, not Mauritius departure. Cats are exempt.
