Critical points
No quarantine is one of the world's most generous pet travel arrangements. New Zealand's Group 1 status is hard-won and reflects decades of biosecurity compliance.
No rabies vaccination is required from NZ pets. However, the DAFF import permit and the health certificate are still mandatory. Do not skip these.
Brachycephalic breeds face cargo restrictions on Qantas. Air New Zealand has similar restrictions. Check breed-specific policies before booking.
Why New Zealand to Australia is uniquely simple
Australia’s pet import system divides countries into groups based on their disease risk profile. New Zealand is one of only a handful of countries in Group 1, Australia’s lowest-risk category. The others include the UK, Ireland, and a small number of Pacific island nations.
Group 1 status means: no rabies vaccination required, no titre test, no quarantine. New Zealand has been rabies-free for its recorded history, and MPI’s biosecurity system is regarded by DAFF as equivalent to Australia’s own.
This is the same Trans-Tasman arrangement that allows people to move between New Zealand and Australia with minimal bureaucracy. Pets get a version of the same treatment.
What you still need: the DAFF permit and health certificate
Despite the simplified requirements, paperwork is still mandatory. Two things you must have:
DAFF import permit: apply to Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry before travel. The permit process for Group 1 countries is straightforward, but it takes 6-8 weeks. Apply early.
MPI-endorsed health certificate: your vet in New Zealand issues the certificate and MPI endorses it. Must be within 10 days of arrival in Australia. The certificate confirms your pet is microchipped, healthy, and free of signs of disease.
At the Australian port of entry (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth), a DAFF biosecurity officer inspects the documentation. For compliant NZ pets, the inspection is typically brief and the pet is released to you on arrival day.
Air New Zealand vs Qantas: which is better for your pet?
Both Air New Zealand and Qantas operate cargo services on the Auckland-Australia routes (SYD, MEL, BNE, PER). For most pets, the practical differences are small.
Air New Zealand is the home carrier and has a well-documented live animal cargo process for this corridor. Qantas Freight also handles large volumes of trans-Tasman pet transport.
One note for brachycephalic breeds: both carriers restrict snub-nosed dogs and cats on cargo. Confirm your breed’s eligibility before booking. If your French Bulldog or Persian cat is planning the move, have a conversation with the cargo team early.
