Critical points
Portugal to Armenia does not have a direct cargo service. All pet cargo involves a hub connection, typically Istanbul. Confirm live animal acceptance on each leg before booking.
DGAV's official vets (MVOs) are distinct from private practice vets. The health certificate must be issued and endorsed by an MVO registered with DGAV. Not all private vets have MVO status. Confirm your vet's authorisation before booking the appointment.
Armenia's SSFS does not require a titre test from EU-origin pets. However, if you have ongoing travel plans beyond Armenia, check the requirements of your next destination.
Temperature embargoes on Turkish Airlines and Gulf carriers during summer months can restrict pet cargo. Spring and autumn are the safest travel seasons.
Approved carriers on this route
| Airline | Notes | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Turkish Airlines | Via Istanbul (IST). Lisbon (LIS) to IST then IST to Yerevan (EVN). Turkish Airlines Cargo handles live animals. The IST-EVN leg is a regular service with established cargo facilities. Temperature embargoes during Turkish summer months may restrict acceptance. | Cargo Only |
| TAP Air Portugal | TAP Air Portugal flies from Lisbon (LIS) to various European hubs. TAP does not fly directly to Armenia. Use TAP to connect to a major hub (Frankfurt, Amsterdam) and then onward to Yerevan via Turkish Airlines or other carriers. Confirm TAP's live animal cargo policy on each leg. | Cargo Only |
| Emirates | Via Dubai (DXB). LIS to DXB then DXB to EVN. Emirates SkyCargo is experienced with pet cargo on Caucasus routes. Brachycephalic breed restrictions apply. Temperature embargoes during Gulf summer. | Cargo Only |
| Lufthansa Cargo | Via Frankfurt (FRA). Connections from LIS to FRA via TAP or Lufthansa, then FRA to EVN via Lufthansa Cargo or partner connections. Frankfurt Animal Lounge available. A reliable option for a European hub-based routing. | Cargo Only |
Armenia's requirements for Portuguese pets
Armenia accepts personal companion pets from EU countries including Portugal with a valid EU health certificate endorsed by DGAV, current microchip, and up-to-date rabies vaccination. No titre test is required.
On arrival at Zvartnots International Airport (EVN), the State Service for Food Safety (SSFS, ssfs.am) inspects the health certificate and checks the pet’s condition. Healthy pets with complete documentation are released without quarantine.
Verify requirements with the Armenian Embassy in Lisbon or at ssfs.am before finalising your plans. Import rules can change.
Cargo routing from Lisbon to Yerevan
There is no direct cargo service between Lisbon (LIS) and Yerevan (EVN). The most practical routing is Turkish Airlines via Istanbul.
Turkish Airlines operates daily flights from Lisbon to Istanbul Atatürk (IST), with connecting Turkish Airlines Cargo services to Yerevan. The IST-EVN segment is a regular route and Turkish Airlines Cargo has experience with live animal movements on this corridor.
Emirates via Dubai (DXB) is an alternative, though it involves a longer total journey. Lufthansa Cargo via Frankfurt is another option, using European hub infrastructure before connecting to Yerevan.
When booking cargo, confirm live animal acceptance on both legs of the journey, not just the long-haul segment.
Portugal's DGAV export process
Portugal’s veterinary export system requires an official vet (Médico Veterinário Oficial, MVO) registered with DGAV to issue the EU health certificate. Not every private vet is an MVO. Check your vet’s authorisation status before booking the appointment.
The MVO examines the pet, completes the EU-format health certificate, and submits it for DGAV endorsement. The endorsed certificate is valid for 10 days from the examination date. Allow one to three working days for DGAV to complete the endorsement.
DGAV’s offices and regional contacts are listed at dgav.pt. If you are unsure which office covers your location, start at dgav.pt and search for the relevant regional veterinary directorate (DSAVR).
