What this route typically costs
Critical points
Portugal to Estonia is one of the longer EU-to-EU routes in this group, with at least one connection and a total journey of 6-9 hours. For very young puppies, elderly dogs, brachycephalic breeds, or anxious pets, consider this before booking and discuss with your vet.
Estonia does not have a national breed ban but certain breeds face handling restrictions in public. Carry breed documentation if your dog is a bull-type breed.
TAP Air Portugal's cabin pet policy covers small animals (typically under 8kg including the carrier). Larger dogs must travel in cargo; confirm TAP cargo live animal availability when booking.
Portuguese EU pet passports must be issued by a DGAV-authorised official vet. Most Portuguese vet practices hold this authorisation.
Planning the journey from Lisbon to Tallinn
Portugal to Estonia is not a route with direct flights. The most practical option from Lisbon (LIS) is TAP Air Portugal to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), then KLM’s direct AMS to Tallinn (TLL) service. This gives you two legs with well-regarded carriers: TAP handles the Lisbon end, and KLM’s Schiphol live animal facilities cover the cargo transit.
For cabin pets, the LIS-AMS leg is about 3 hours and AMS-TLL is about 2.5 hours. A connection at Amsterdam means time in transit, but Schiphol is an efficient airport and connections are usually smooth.
An alternative is Frankfurt (FRA) via Lufthansa, which opens access to the Frankfurt Animal Lounge for cargo pets. The LIS-FRA-TLL routing adds a bit more time but is well-served by Lufthansa Cargo.
Finnair via Helsinki works for owners who prefer that hub or who find better fares on the Helsinki connection. HEL-TLL is frequent and short at about 50 minutes.
A long EU-to-EU route: managing the journey for your pet
Six to nine hours of travel is significant for a dog or cat. On a route this length, preparation matters.
For small pets in cabin, think about water access during transit, whether your pet can relieve itself before boarding, and whether your carrier is comfortable for the full journey. Most airlines do not allow pets out of carriers in cabin, so the carrier needs to be both secure and comfortable.
For cargo pets, the Amsterdam Schiphol facilities or Frankfurt Animal Lounge provide professional care during any extended transit. Choose a routing with a manageable connection time rather than an excessively long layover.
Talk to your vet before the trip about whether any additional support (such as a calming aid or pheromone spray) is appropriate. Never use sedation without specific veterinary guidance and understanding of the risks in a pressurised aircraft hold.
