Do I need any special documents to take my pet from Portugal to Switzerland?

No. A valid EU pet passport is all you need. Switzerland accepts EU passports under the bilateral veterinary agreement between Switzerland and the European Union. The passport must show your pet’s microchip number and a current rabies vaccination.

There is no import permit to apply for, no titre test to arrange, and no quarantine period to factor into your plans. Portuguese DGAV does not need to endorse any documents for Switzerland-bound pets.

Just ensure the passport is filled in correctly and legibly by your Portuguese vet. An official may inspect it on arrival in Switzerland – a quick check rather than a formal inspection process.

Which airline should I use from Lisbon to Zurich or Geneva?

TAP Air Portugal and SWISS are your two main direct-service options from Lisbon. Both accept small pets in cabin (typically under 8kg including carrier) and have cargo options for larger animals.

SWISS brings the advantage of home-ground familiarity at Zurich – their ground team knows the FSVO routine well. TAP is your national carrier and has an established cabin pet booking process from Lisbon.

Lufthansa via Frankfurt is a reliable indirect option with good cargo infrastructure. If you have a large dog that needs to travel as cargo, the Frankfurt hub is well-equipped for live animal handling.

Avoid budget carriers on this route. easyJet and Ryanair do not accept pets under any circumstances.

Is there a quarantine period when arriving in Switzerland from Portugal?

No. There is no quarantine for compliant pets arriving from EU countries, including Portugal. Switzerland’s entry rules mirror the EU’s intra-community pet movement rules for animals with valid EU pet passports.

On arrival at Zurich or Geneva, your pet travels home with you. The border check is routine and typically takes only a few minutes.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes. Switzerland accepts EU pet passports under its bilateral veterinary agreement with the EU. A Portuguese-issued EU pet passport showing a valid microchip and current rabies vaccination is sufficient for your pet to enter Switzerland. No additional certificate or import permit is required.
No. Pets originating in EU countries do not need a titre test to enter Switzerland. The titre test requirement applies only to pets from non-EU, non-listed countries.
Most likely not – cabin pet allowances are typically limited to animals under 8kg including carrier. A 12kg dog would travel in the hold as cargo. Contact TAP’s cargo division to arrange a cargo booking. The hold on Lisbon-Zurich flights is pressurised and temperature-controlled.
Book a booster with your vet as soon as possible. If the booster is given before the previous vaccination’s expiry date, no new 21-day wait applies. If there has been a lapse in vaccination coverage, a new 21-day wait is required after the booster. Update the EU pet passport with the new vaccination record before travelling.
Yes. The process is the same regardless of transport mode – present your EU pet passport at the Swiss border crossing. Many people drive or take the train from Portugal through France into Switzerland with pets, using the same EU passport documentation.
