Pet Transport from Portugal to the United Kingdom

The cargo route is simple to describe: an agent books the pet as manifested cargo with British Airways (or Aer Lingus UK or TUI Airways, the other UK-serving carriers still moving animals) into Heathrow. It works, it is the only all-air answer, and for a large dog it is usually the sensible one.

The overland workaround is popular for a reason. Fly with your pet to Paris or Amsterdam, where continental carriers offer cabin and hold options that UK-bound flights refuse, then drive to Calais and cross by Eurotunnel or ferry on an approved route. It is legal, widely used, and keeps the pet with you; the tapeworm treatment for dogs can be done by a French or Dutch vet as long as the 24-to-120-hour window lands on your GB arrival time. In summer, book the crossing early: pet spaces sell out with the holiday traffic.

Two rules trip people up either way. Entry must be on an APHA-approved carrier and route, and those routes lead only to England and Scotland; there are no approved pet routes into Wales. And more than five pets, or a pet travelling unaccompanied for sale or rehoming, drops out of the passenger scheme into commercial Balai rules with different certification.

The UK’s one distinctive requirement is worth quoting exactly: your dog must be treated against Echinococcus multilocularis no less than 24 hours before, and no more than 5 days before, arrival in Great Britain. The treatment must contain praziquantel, be administered by a vet, and be recorded in the passport with the date and time, product and signature.

Count backwards from the scheduled arrival, not the departure. A Lisbon vet appointment on Monday afternoon covers a Wednesday morning arrival comfortably; it does not cover the following Sunday. Portugal has no exemption (only Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta and Norway are exempt origins), and cats need nothing.
