Pet Transport from Saudi Arabia to the UK: 2026 Process
Bringing a pet from Saudi Arabia to the UK takes careful planning. The UK requires a titre test and a three-month waiting period for pets from unlisted countries, which Saudi Arabia is. Factor in the MEWA export process and summer cargo embargoes, and you are …

What this route typically costs
Critical points
The three-month wait after a satisfactory titre test is a legal requirement. There is no shortcut. Start this process at minimum five months before your intended travel date.
Saudi Arabia restricts dog imports to working dog classifications. The SAME restriction applies in reverse for export purposes in some interpretations. Verify your dog's classification with MEWA and the receiving UK authority before starting the process.
Microchip MUST be implanted before vaccination. Reversing this order invalidates the titre test process and restarts the entire timeline.
The new AHC template is mandatory for UK entry from October 2026 onwards. Certificates on the old template issued after September 2026 will not be accepted.
Summer cargo temperature embargoes (June to September) affect flights from Riyadh and Jeddah. Some airlines suspend cargo pet services during peak heat. Plan to travel in spring or autumn.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
Why the UK requires a titre test from Saudi Arabia
Great Britain maintains a list of approved countries whose pets can enter without a titre test. Saudi Arabia is not currently on that list. This means any dog or cat moving from Saudi Arabia to the UK must go through the unlisted country process: a blood sample at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination, tested at an APHA-approved laboratory to confirm a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, followed by a three-month wait from the date that satisfactory result was recorded.
The three-month wait is measured from the date the blood was drawn, not from when you receive the result. So the total minimum timeline from vaccination to travel-ready is: vaccination, 30-day wait, blood draw, three-month wait. That is roughly four months of preparation before you even factor in booking cargo and obtaining the health certificate.
One important update for 2026: a new Animal Health Certificate template was introduced in April 2026, with the old template remaining valid until September 2026. From October 2026, only the new template will be accepted at UK ports.
The dog classification issue you must know about
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) restricts which dogs can be imported into Saudi Arabia. Under MEWA regulations, only dogs classified as working dogs, such as guide dogs, security dogs, and hunting dogs, are permitted. This restriction also affects dogs being exported from Saudi Arabia, as their documentation must reflect an accepted classification.
Before starting the export process, confirm with MEWA and your UK-based pet agent that your dog’s documentation is in order and that the classification will satisfy both Saudi export requirements and UK import authority expectations.
Cats face no equivalent restriction and generally move through this route without classification complications.
Airlines and the summer heat issue
Saudia and British Airways both operate direct Riyadh and Jeddah to Heathrow services and are the main options for cargo pet transport. Qatar Airways via Doha is a practical connecting alternative, though it adds a connection point.
The summer heat embargo is a real practical constraint. Between June and September, tarmac temperatures at Saudi airports regularly exceed the threshold at which airlines can safely accept live animals in cargo. Most carriers suspend or significantly restrict pet cargo during this period. If your titre test waiting period spans the summer months, you may find yourself waiting for October before you can book a flight. Build this into your timeline from the start.
