Critical points
Sri Lanka is unlisted for UK pet travel. The titre test and 90-day wait are mandatory. DAPH's own processes can be slow: apply for the export permit at least three months before your intended travel date.
Sri Lanka's DAPH is known for strict documentation requirements. Ensure all paperwork is complete, accurate, and in the correct order. Missing information is a common delay trigger.
Sri Lanka has a 21-day mandatory quarantine for pets IMPORTING into Sri Lanka (arriving in Sri Lanka). This does not affect pets being exported from Sri Lanka. But if you are planning to return to Sri Lanka in the future with this same pet, be aware of that requirement.
Sri Lanka bans Pit Bull Terriers from import. The UK bans Pit Bull Terrier type dogs under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. If your dog is this type, seek advice before starting.
DAPH's process and why you should start early
Sri Lanka’s Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) handles the export permit and endorses the official health certificate for animals leaving the country. The process involves submitting documentation, and in some cases, DAPH conducts a physical inspection of the animal before issuing the permit.
DAPH processing times can extend beyond six weeks, especially if additional information is requested. Starting the permit application at the same time as the titre test planning, rather than sequentially, allows both processes to run in parallel and reduces the overall timeline. Working with a local agent who has experience with DAPH paperwork is advisable.
The DAPH-endorsed health certificate has a 10-day validity from the date of examination. The cargo booking needs to fall within that window. Get the DAPH permit first, then finalise the certificate and cargo date together.
Colombo cargo options for London
Colombo Bandaranaike International (CMB) has reasonable cargo connections to London. SriLankan Airlines offers a direct CMB-LHR service, which is the cleanest routing for UK-bound pet cargo. It avoids additional transits and keeps the journey as short as possible.
Emirates via Dubai and Qatar Airways via Doha are the main hub-routing alternatives. Both carriers have established live animal cargo operations and experienced ground handling for pets in transit. The Dubai transit (Emirates) introduces summer temperature restrictions: if your cargo travels through Dubai between June and September, confirm the carrier’s temperature embargo policy for your pet’s breed and size.
