What does Portugal require for a pet arriving from Switzerland?

Portugal’s DGAV (Directorate-General of Food and Veterinary Affairs) applies EU pet travel standards to Swiss-origin animals. A valid Swiss pet passport showing microchip and current rabies vaccination is accepted. The 21-day wait after a primary vaccination applies.

No titre test is required. No quarantine. No import permit. DGAV may carry out a routine inspection at Lisbon airport but this does not require advance arrangement.

Switzerland’s non-EU status does not complicate things here – the bilateral agreement covers pet movement comprehensively.

SWISS vs TAP: which airline from Zurich to Lisbon?

SWISS offers direct Zurich to Lisbon service and accepts small pets in cabin – a straightforward option from the Swiss end.

TAP Air Portugal is the national carrier and serves the same route in the opposite direction. TAP’s cabin pet process is well-established and their Lisbon staff handle DGAV formalities routinely.

Both airlines charge a cabin pet fee (approximately CHF 50-90). For large dogs in cargo, both SWISS Cargo and TAP Cargo handle the route. The Zurich to Lisbon flight is approximately 2.5 hours.

Ryanair and easyJet both fly between Zurich and Lisbon but neither accepts pets. If you are tempted by a budget fare, confirm the pet policy before purchasing.

Is it possible to drive from Switzerland to Portugal with a pet?

Yes – many owners drive from Switzerland through France and into Portugal with their pets. The Swiss pet passport is accepted at all border crossings. The drive from Zurich to Lisbon takes approximately 20 hours (two long driving days or three comfortable ones).

For large dogs that cannot fly in cabin, driving avoids cargo fees. Your pet travels with you in the car.

If crossing through France, France is an EU country and accepts Swiss pet documentation under the same bilateral agreement. No additional paperwork is needed at the French or Spanish borders.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes. Portugal accepts Swiss pet passports under the EU-Swiss bilateral veterinary agreement. A Swiss passport showing a valid microchip and current rabies vaccination is treated equivalently to an EU pet passport. No titre test, quarantine, or import permit is required.
Yes. SWISS and TAP Air Portugal both accept small dogs in cabin on this route, subject to a weight limit of approximately 8kg including the carrier. Book the cabin pet spot when purchasing your ticket.
No. The documentation requirements are the same for permanent relocation as for a visit. A Swiss pet passport with valid microchip and rabies vaccination is sufficient to import your cat into Portugal. If you want a Portuguese EU pet passport issued (for future EU travel), a Portuguese vet can issue one.
Portugal has a list of potentially dangerous dog breeds (Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Dogue de Bordeaux, Fila Brasileiro, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Tosa Inu, among others). These breeds are not necessarily banned from entry but their ownership is regulated. If you have one of these breeds, check current Portuguese breed regulations before travel.
Budget approximately CHF 50-90 for the cabin pet fee with SWISS or TAP. Add the cost of a suitable soft-sided carrier if you do not have one. Total out-of-pocket cost for a small dog in cabin on this route is typically under CHF 150.
