What this route typically costs
Critical points
Tanzania is unlisted for UK pet travel. The titre test and 90-day wait are mandatory. Plan four to five months from microchip to departure.
Tanzania has a 10-day minimum quarantine for IMPORT of pets into Tanzania. This applies to pets arriving in Tanzania, not pets being exported from Tanzania to the UK.
Routing from Tanzania to London involves at least one transit. Kenya Airways via Nairobi is the most established East Africa to UK route. Verify live animal acceptance and transit conditions at the connecting hub.
Two main departure airports serve Tanzania: Dar es Salaam Julius Nyerere International (DAR) and Kilimanjaro International (JRO) near Arusha and Moshi. Check which has better cargo connections on your travel date.
Tanzania's Ministry of Livestock and the export documentation
The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, via the Tanzania Veterinary Council, handles the endorsement of health certificates for animals leaving Tanzania. Your official vet issues the certificate and the Ministry endorses it. Both are required for UK border inspection.
Apply for the export permit at least six weeks before travel. Allow for the possibility that the Ministry may require an inspection of the animal before issuing the permit. Have your FAVN titre test result, vaccination records, and microchip documentation ready when applying, as these form part of the permit application in most cases.
The health certificate, once endorsed, is valid for 10 days. Align the vet appointment with your departure date so both fall within that window.
East Africa to London: routing and transit options
Dar es Salaam (DAR) is Tanzania’s main international cargo hub. Kenya Airways via Nairobi (NBO) is the classic East Africa to London routing, and Kenya Airways Cargo has substantial experience with live animal shipments from the region. The NBO transit is usually a few hours and connects to London Heathrow on Kenya Airways or partner carrier.
Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) is a strong alternative. Ethiopian Cargo has a dedicated live animal facility at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport, and the ADD-LHR route operates regularly. Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH) is another option, particularly from Kilimanjaro (JRO) or if scheduling works better. Confirm live animal acceptance, transit handling, and the full routing before booking.
