Critical points

Thailand is classified as a rabies-affected country by BARANTAN. The FAVN titre test is required before travel, and the quarantine on arrival is 30 days, not 14 days. This is more extensive than the process for pets from rabies-free countries such as Japan. Start preparations at least 4 months before your target travel date.

Entry into Indonesia for pets from Thailand must be through Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport) only. Do not book a flight to Bali, Surabaya, or any other Indonesian airport.

The BARANTAN import permit must be in hand before travel. Without it, your pet cannot be processed on arrival at Jakarta.

The DLD airport inspection is approximately 48 hours before the flight, not on the day. Confirm the inspection appointment at Suvarnabhumi Airport cargo zone well in advance.

Why Thailand faces a different BARANTAN process than Japan

Indonesia’s BARANTAN (Agricultural Quarantine Agency) divides incoming pets by the rabies status of the origin country. Japan is classified as rabies-free, which means its pets face a 14-day quarantine in Jakarta. Thailand is classified as a rabies-affected country, which changes the requirements significantly.

For pets from Thailand, BARANTAN requires a FAVN titre test (or equivalent rabies antibody test) demonstrating that the pet’s vaccination has produced a sufficient immune response. The titre test result must meet BARANTAN’s minimum level. Only after this is confirmed can the pet travel.

On arrival, the quarantine period is 30 days rather than 14 days. BARANTAN vets inspect the pet daily during quarantine. If the pet remains healthy throughout, it is released with a clearance certificate at the end of the 30-day period.

The FAVN titre test from Thailand: practical steps

The FAVN (or equivalent) titre test blood sample is drawn in Thailand by your vet and shipped to a BARANTAN-approved laboratory. Most approved laboratories are outside Thailand, so your vet needs to arrange international cold-chain shipping.

The sequence is: microchip first, then rabies vaccination, then wait at least 30 days before the blood draw. After the draw, allow 2 to 4 weeks for the laboratory result. If the result passes the minimum level, you can proceed with the permit and travel arrangements.

Not all vets in Bangkok have experience shipping blood samples internationally for titre tests. Ask your vet directly whether they have done this before. A pet transport specialist can connect you with a vet who has the required experience if needed.

Jakarta is the only entry point

All international pet arrivals in Indonesia must go through Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, CGK). This applies regardless of your final destination in Indonesia.

If you are moving to Bali, you complete the 30-day quarantine in Jakarta and then arrange onward domestic travel. If your destination is elsewhere in Indonesia, confirm that domestic carriers will accept your pet from Jakarta and that your destination falls within a BARANTAN-approved domestic movement zone.

The 30-day quarantine is at the BARANTAN facility at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Contact BARANTAN in advance about their current policy on owner visits during the quarantine period, and whether you can bring specific items such as familiar bedding.

FAQ

Common questions

No. All international pet arrivals in Indonesia must go through Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta Airport). Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport is not an approved entry point for international pet imports. If your final destination is Bali, you complete the 30-day quarantine in Jakarta, then arrange domestic travel to Bali.
Your pet is taken to the BARANTAN facility at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on arrival. BARANTAN vets inspect the pet daily. If the pet remains healthy throughout the 30-day period, it is released with a BARANTAN clearance certificate. The quarantine cannot be shortened. Contact BARANTAN in advance about the current daily rate and visitor policy.
Japan is rabies-free, so BARANTAN does not require a titre test for Japan-origin pets. Thailand is a rabies-affected country, so BARANTAN requires the FAVN titre test to confirm immunity. The test must be done at a BARANTAN-approved laboratory and must meet the minimum antibody level. This adds several weeks to the preparation timeline.
If the first titre test result is below the minimum level, you need to revaccinate and restart the 30-day wait before drawing blood again. A failed first test adds 2 to 3 months to the timeline. This is why starting early is important.
