Critical points

Bangkok to Mexico City has no direct flights. All routings go via a hub in Asia, Europe, or the US. The total journey for your pet in cargo can be 20 to 36 hours depending on the hub and layover time. Choose a routing with the shortest hub layover and confirm live animal cargo is accepted on every segment.

The health certificate is valid for only 15 days from issue for SENASICA. Time the DLD inspection and certificate issue carefully so the document remains valid on your Mexico arrival date.

SENASICA will spray the travel crate with disinfectant on arrival and remove bedding and accessories. Do not put anything in the crate you want to keep. Bring your pet's collar, leash, and essentials separately.

The DLD airport inspection is approximately 48 hours before the flight, not on the day. Confirm your inspection appointment at Suvarnabhumi Airport cargo facility well in advance.

Thailand's DLD export inspection: timing the 48-hour window

Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development (DLD) runs the export process. The key document is Form R.9, the export licence, issued after an airport inspection at the DLD office within the Suvarnabhumi Airport cargo zone.

The inspection typically takes place approximately 48 hours before the scheduled flight, not on the day of travel. This is a fixed procedural requirement. You book the inspection appointment in advance, bring your pet to the cargo facility, and the DLD officer checks the microchip, reviews vaccination and health records, and confirms the pet appears healthy.

Your health certificate from the DLD-authorised vet needs to be timed correctly: it must be issued close enough to your travel date that it remains within SENASICA’s 15-day validity window when you arrive in Mexico. If your travel date is more than 15 days after the certificate issue date, SENASICA will reject it.

SENASICA on arrival: what happens at Mexico City airport

At Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport, SENASICA officers at the Agriculture Health Inspection Office check all arriving pets. They review: the health certificate (must be within 15 days), the rabies vaccination record (within 12 months), the antiparasitic treatment record (within 6 months), and the completed FF-SENASICA-003 form.

They physically inspect the pet and spray the travel crate with disinfectant. All bedding, toys, and accessories inside the crate are removed and not returned. Put nothing in the crate that matters to you. The collar and leash should be with you separately.

If documentation is correct and complete, clearance takes 30 to 60 minutes. If there are issues with the paperwork, a SENASICA vet may be called, which adds time.

Routing Bangkok to Mexico City

There are no direct flights from Bangkok to Mexico City. The main routing options are: via Tokyo (JAL or another carrier to NRT, then JAL to MEX, which offers the most direct connection to Mexico); via Seoul (Korean Air to ICN, then connections to Latin America); via Frankfurt (Lufthansa to FRA, then Lufthansa or LATAM to MEX); via Los Angeles or Dallas (various carriers to US hub, then American to MEX).

The Tokyo routing is often the cleanest for Bangkok-to-Mexico cargo because JAL operates the NRT to MEX route directly and has live animal cargo experience. The Frankfurt routing is longer in total distance but Lufthansa has a strong live animal cargo operation.

Confirm live animal cargo acceptance on every segment before booking. Not all carriers accept pets on connecting cargo legs even on routes where they normally accept them.

FAQ

Common questions

No. The DLD inspection at Suvarnabhumi Airport cargo facility typically takes place approximately 48 hours before the flight, not on the day. You need to be in Bangkok two days before your departure date and attend the inspection at the airport cargo zone. Contact DLD or your pet transport agent to book the inspection appointment in advance.
Yes. Mexico’s SENASICA requirements apply equally to cats and dogs from any country including Thailand. Your cat needs the health certificate (within 15 days), rabies vaccination (within 12 months), antiparasitic treatment record (within 6 months), and the FF-SENASICA-003 form (which has a specific version for cats). The DLD export inspection covers cats as well.
The journey from Bangkok to Mexico City typically takes 20 to 36 hours in cargo transit, depending on the routing and hub layover time. This is a long journey. Discuss the journey length with your vet before booking. Ensure the IATA crate is sized correctly for your pet to stand, turn, and lie down.
Routing via a US hub is possible in some cases, but check whether your pet’s cargo technically enters US customs at the hub. If the pet is processed as US cargo and not transit, additional US documentation may be required. Confirm with the airline and your agent before booking a US-hub routing.
