Critical points
The Echinococcus tapeworm treatment window for dogs is strict: between 24 and 120 hours before the scheduled arrival time in Finland. Earlier or later treatments are not compliant. Calculate from your flight's scheduled Helsinki arrival time, not departure time. Missing this window means your dog may be refused entry or held for treatment.
UK pet passports issued in Great Britain are not valid for EU entry. You need an AHC from an APHA-authorised official vet, issued within 10 days of travel.
Cats are not subject to the Echinococcus requirement. The treatment and recording on the AHC applies to dogs only.
Finland has no federal breed ban, but some municipalities may have local restrictions. Check with your local Finnish authority after arrival if your dog is a breed that might face restrictions elsewhere in Europe.
The Echinococcus treatment: the one thing UK pet owners miss
Echinococcus multilocularis is a tapeworm that poses a risk to both animals and humans. Finland, along with Norway and a handful of other countries, requires that dogs arriving from abroad be treated against it before entry. The treatment window is not flexible.
Your dog must receive an approved product (typically praziquantel at the correct dose for body weight) between 24 and 120 hours before its scheduled arrival time in Finland. The clock starts from the arrival time at Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL), not from when the flight departs London. If the flight is delayed, the window calculation does not change: it is still based on the original scheduled arrival.
The treating vet records the product name, the dose given, and the exact date and time of administration on the AHC. Finnish border control checks this record. If the treatment is outside the window or not recorded, entry may be refused or the dog held at the airport for inspection.
Plan the treatment appointment carefully. For a direct Finnair flight from Heathrow to Helsinki (typically around 3 hours), work backwards from the Helsinki arrival time to find the 24-120 hour window, then book the vet appointment in that range.
Arriving in Helsinki and the Finnish inspection
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) handles regular international pet cargo arrivals. Finnish border control (under the Finnish Food Authority, Ruokavirasto) checks the AHC, microchip, and vaccination record. For dogs, the Echinococcus treatment record on the AHC is verified.
For pets with complete documentation, the inspection is typically straightforward and not lengthy. Pets without a valid Echinococcus record for dogs may be treated at the airport at the owner’s cost and held pending clearance, or refused entry.
Finnair Cargo is the obvious choice from Heathrow, given the direct LHR-HEL service. The flight is short for an international cargo journey. British Airways also covers the route. Finland’s climate, with cold winters (temperatures can drop well below zero in Helsinki) is worth noting for travel timing: airlines apply cold weather restrictions on certain breeds during the coldest months.
