Critical points

The 30-day minimum after first vaccination is a firm EU requirement. Arrange vaccination well in advance.

The USDA APHIS health certificate must be valid for EU entry (10 days). Time the endorsement to align with travel.

Confirm live animal acceptance on every leg of the journey independently. A booking on one leg does not guarantee acceptance on the next.

No titre test is required from the US, but if the primary vaccination history is incomplete or unclear, Czech border officials may raise questions.

EU Import Requirements for US-Origin Pets

European Union rules for pets entering from outside the EU specify three core requirements for dogs and cats from the United States: an ISO-compatible microchip implanted before the first vaccination; a valid rabies vaccination with at least 30 days elapsed since the first vaccination in the primary course; and a valid health certificate issued by an accredited official veterinarian and endorsed by the US national competent authority.

For US owners, the national competent authority is USDA APHIS. The endorsed health certificate is the USDA APHIS-endorsed form, which goes through the same endorsement process used for all US pet exports: an accredited veterinarian completes the certificate, and the USDA APHIS State Veterinarian’s office in the relevant state endorses it.

The Czech Republic does not add requirements beyond the EU minimum for US-origin pets. There is no separate Czech import permit, no pre-notification to Czech veterinary authorities, and no titre test requirement for US-origin pets. Arrival is handled at the port of entry with a documentation check.

One practical note on the 30-day rule: this applies to the first vaccination in a pet’s rabies history, not to boosters. A pet with a long and continuous vaccination history is unlikely to have an issue with this rule. For pets receiving their first-ever rabies vaccination for this trip, the vaccination should be given at least 30 days before the EU entry date.

USDA APHIS Endorsement and Health Certificate Validity

The USDA APHIS endorsement process is the same for Czech Republic-bound pets as it is for any other EU destination. An accredited veterinarian in the US examines the animal, completes the health certificate in the EU-compatible format (the USDA APHIS EU health certificate for cats and dogs), and submits it to the relevant State Veterinarian office. The State Vet endorses the certificate, confirming the vet’s accredited status and the document’s authenticity.

State-level processing times vary. In major cities and agricultural states with well-resourced USDA offices, same-day or next-day endorsement is available. In less-staffed offices, allow five to seven business days. Budget one to two weeks and contact your state office early to understand their current turnaround.

The EU-entry health certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue. This validity window applies at the port of entry into the EU, which is your Czech arrival (or the EU arrival airport if connecting via another EU country). Time the vet appointment and APHIS endorsement to fall within 10 days of your Czech arrival date.

Getting from US Airports to Prague

Prague does not have a large number of direct long-haul cargo connections from US airports for individual pet shipments. The most reliable routing is typically via Frankfurt with Lufthansa Cargo. Frankfurt Airport has well-developed live animal handling infrastructure and processes many connecting cargo shipments daily.

Other hub options include Amsterdam via KLM Cargo, Paris via Air France Cargo, or Vienna via Austrian Airlines cargo connections. Czech Airlines/Smartwings occasionally offers seasonal direct PRG to JFK connections, but availability and live animal acceptance on these routes should be confirmed directly with their cargo division.

When routing via a European hub, book both legs as separate cargo shipments with the respective carriers and confirm live animal acceptance on each leg. Hub transit times for live animals are typically two to four hours at Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Total journey time from a US departure point to Prague is typically 12-18 hours including the hub connection.

US airports suitable for live animal departure include JFK, Chicago O’Hare, LAX, and several others. Your cargo agent or relocation agent can advise on the most reliable routing for your specific US location and travel dates.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes. Cats from the US entering the Czech Republic need an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and a USDA APHIS-endorsed health certificate. The 30-day rule for the primary vaccination also applies to cats. No titre test is required.
Yes. USDA APHIS has a specific form for pets entering the European Union, which captures the EU-required information in the format accepted at EU ports of entry. Ask your accredited vet specifically for the EU pet health certificate form. Using the wrong certificate format can cause problems at the border.
For a permanent relocation, the entry requirements are the same as for a visit. Once in the Czech Republic, you may need to register your dog with the local municipality and obtain a dog licence (licence fees apply in most Czech municipalities). Register with a local vet and update your pet’s microchip registration to your Czech address.
On the transatlantic leg, most carriers require pets to travel as cargo, even small ones. Some carriers allow very small pets (under around 7 kg including carrier) in cabin on qualifying transatlantic routes. If you are connecting via a European hub, the European leg may have a cabin pet option. Check with each carrier separately for each leg.
Czech customs and border veterinary authorities may check the USDA APHIS health certificate on arrival. For compliant arrivals from the US via EU hubs, the check is typically brief. If connecting within the EU (e.g. arriving at Frankfurt and transiting to Prague), Czech authorities may accept that the EU border check already occurred at Frankfurt. Clarify with your cargo agent which airport will conduct the formal border check.
