APHRD permit: the longest step in the process
Ethiopia’s Animal and Plant Health Regulatory Directorate requires the import permit application to be submitted at least 8 weeks before travel. This is the single longest administrative lead time on this route, and it determines when you need to have everything else ready. Apply as early as possible once your travel date is confirmed. The application needs microchip details, vaccination records, titre test results, and planned entry details.
The titre test adds further time. Blood must be drawn at least 30 days after your pet’s most recent rabies vaccination, and results take 2-3 weeks. Run the titre test and permit application in parallel to reduce total preparation time. With both running simultaneously, you can realistically complete preparations in 12-14 weeks from today if your vaccinations are already current.
Flying with Ethiopian Airlines and the quarantine
Ethiopian Airlines operates direct flights to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport from Washington Dulles, New York JFK, Los Angeles LAX, and other US cities. Their cargo team handles live animals, and the airline has a strong track record for animal welfare on long-haul routes. Book well in advance, as live animal space on any flight is limited and Ethiopia is a busy cargo corridor.
The 10-day quarantine begins immediately on arrival at Bole Airport. The owner pays all facility fees for the full period. Visiting arrangements during quarantine should be confirmed with APHRD when you apply for the permit. After 10 days, APHRD clears the quarantine and your pet can come home.
