Microchip

Not legally mandated, but a 15-digit chip meeting ISO 11784 or Annex A to ISO 11785 is expected on the documentation. Implant it before rabies vaccination so the paperwork lines up. Source: licensed pet import documentation, checked July 2026.

Rabies vaccination

Required for pets over three months old, given between 30 days and 12 months before arrival in Lesotho. Dogs also need current cover against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, leptospirosis and parainfluenza; cats need feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia.

Rabies titre test

Not required for a pet arriving from the United States, or from any other country, under Lesotho's own import rules. This is a real contrast with the reverse route: a dog leaving Lesotho for the US, a CDC high-risk country for dog rabies, needs a serology titre or a 28-day quarantine at a CDC-registered facility. None of that CDC framework applies here; it governs entry to the US, not entry to Lesotho.

Quarantine

No quarantine for a pet arriving with complete, compliant paperwork. Non-compliant arrivals face quarantine where available, return to origin, or, in unresolved serious cases, euthanasia at the importer's expense.

Import permit

An application for import with the Director of Animal Health is required, since the US is not one of the SADC member nations (Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini or Zimbabwe) that get a waiver on this step.

Moshoeshoe I International Airport has exactly one scheduled international destination, Johannesburg, flown only by Airlink. There is no way to avoid this transfer, and it runs on a separate air waybill from the Delta leg.

Lesotho's own rules currently ask for no titre test from any origin country, but that's Lesotho's policy to change. Confirm the current position with the Director of Animal Health close to travel.
